In the comments on a recent post[0] regarding new EU rules banning the destruction of unsold fashion merchandise, many (presumably European) commenters are insisting that passing clothes to African resellers will be pure greenwashing: a waste of CO2 shipping them only to be burned elsewhere.

This article is an interesting counterpoint: In fact, in Nigeria thrifting (Okrika) is so popular that the government felt compelled to ban it in order to protect a local fashion industry.

I lived in Nigeria for much of the 1970s and it somehow pleased me that this article mentioned the only state president I ever met: Yakubu Gowon.
