I have a similar habit for the folks in my life that were important. Old friends that I've found have passed, you know the type.

I learned early on that it's a bad idea to include any sort of cause in the date label. When "Suicide: [redacted]" and a picture of celebratory party poppers hit my phone a few years ago, I crumpled -- the person it was reminding me of had been a good friend for years and had encouraged me to learn and do.

He couldn't fight his own demons though.

Ah, man, I feel for you. It has been years since my grandmother passed, but I still sometimes wake up screaming at night. This kind of thing would be torture for me. I avoid all things big tech - but the dates of the events themselves are still emblazoned in my mind. I hope some day we are both able to look back and just remember they loved us and we loved them... Until then, stay strong. I hope the saying "time heals all wounds" is accurate... Because I haven't seen it as of yet.

This is painful, I couldn't bear to do this. I still have an email rule to delete anything mentioning "Father's Day". And then I went scorched-earth-forget-everything and moved every picture of him into a tarball that wouldn't show up in a gallery view. One of these days I'll get around to unpacking that grief.

i'm similarly irritated whenever I login to Amazon and once a year get guilted with "Have you bought your mother's day gift yet?" for my dead mom.

you would think that a company that prides themselves on their customer information gathering would tip-toe around that stuff a little bit more.. but it barely dissuades future purchases so maybe i'm the idiot for thinking that.

best of luck. it really hurts and always will, but one day the grief will recede and you'll be left with all of the warm memories of your father. it may take years to process the grief, it took me about 3, but it gets better.
