    Bill Number: SB-1037

    Author: Senator Wiener

    Status: Passed by Governor

California just passed a law that hits cities hard if they drag their feet on approving housing developments. If local governments fail to comply with state housing requirements, they could face massive fines of up to $50,000 per month. The money collected will be used to boost affordable housing in the same area. The law also empowers courts to intercept public funds if cities refuse to pay—meaning there’s no escape for housing rule violators!

$50k/mo would be massive for an individual, but seems pretty minimal on the scale of a city. For a smallish city, that’s $1/resident/mo. A whole $12/yr in taxes for each resident.

The article suggests the fine is "per month for each violation", which I presume means you can have multiple ongoing fines.

So each violation being like each house under the requirement? Or what is considered a violation

CA doesn't need more houses, it needs less people

What is your modest proposal for convincing people to move away from California when the hole in their pocket is not a big enough incentive?

yeh thats evil. So you think cali should be able to kick out the poor and replace them with incoming rich. Because that the only way this work. And we are doing this simply so people who bought housing first can use home as investment nest eggs instead of a place to live
